DOES IT HURT?

If fixed braces, an archwire or elastics have just been fitted, this can temporarily cause discomfort. The reason: tooth movement is now beginning. If you find the pain very unpleasant, please take a painkiller. However, the discomfort should not last longer than three to five days - and if it does: please arrange an SOS appointment at our orthodontic practice in Berlin.

Our advice:

Especially when chewing, the orthodontic appliance is often perceived as unfamiliar during the first few days. Make the adjustment easier by choosing soft or puréed foods and drinking cooler rather than warm beverages. After about one week, you can usually eat just as you did before.

Soreness and pressure pain

At the beginning of treatment, parts of orthodontic appliances may irritate the oral mucosa. In this case, please rinse with an anti-inflammatory solution, such as chamomile solution. At the same time, cover any brackets, bands or wires that feel irritating with the protective wax you received from us.

DOES IT POKE?

Sometimes the ends of the archwire can be irritating. Please try carefully bending the end of the archwire back and pressing it down using the handle of a spoon or the eraser end of a pencil. If this is not possible, cover the irritating end of the wire with the protective wax you received from us. If neither measure brings relief or you no longer have any wax, please arrange an SOS appointment with us.

HAS SOMETHING COME LOOSE?

If a bracket, metal band or archwire has come completely loose, it needs to be reattached. Please arrange an SOS appointment with us.

What can come loose, and how?

The bracket or metal band has come loose from the tooth but is still attached to the archwire. Please do not try to fix this yourself. Instead, arrange an SOS appointment with us so we can reattach it.

A metal band has come loose from the tooth. Please try to slide the band back onto the tooth - after cleaning it with a toothbrush first - and arrange an SOS appointment with us.

A bracket or band has come completely loose. It is no longer connected to the archwire. Please carefully remove the loose part, call us to let us know and bring it with you to your next appointment at the practice.

The archwire has come loose from the bracket or band. Try using tweezers to place the archwire back into the bracket or band. You can cover the end of the archwire with the protective wax you received from us. If this does not work, please arrange an SOS appointment.
